Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) Treatment in Kelowna
What are the common treatments for Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)?
ADD/ADHD is treatable. There are several options, which should be discussed with your doctor. Generally, a combination of medication and education is the most effective.
The most common type of medication used for treating ADHD is called a "stimulant." Although it may seem odd to treat ADHD with a medication considered a stimulant, it will actually have a calming effect on children with ADHD. There are a few other ADHD medications that are non-stimulants and work differently than stimulants. For many children, ADHD medications reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve their ability to focus, work, and learn. Medication also may improve physical coordination.
Different types of psychotherapy are practiced for the treatment of ADHD. Behavioural therapy aims to help a person change his or her behaviour. It may involve practical assistance, such as help organizing tasks or completing schoolwork, or working through emotionally difficult events.
